SSI Manta & Ray Ecology

Diving with mantas, meeting curious stingrays or being surrounded by Mobula rays is an experience divers dream of! It is an opportunity not to be missed. In the SSI Manta & Ray Ecology specialty program, you will learn how to recognize different ray species and interact with them safely.

New Zealand is a hotspot for stingrays and eagle rays and is often visited by Manta rays at hot spots such as the Poor Knights. You would be unlikely not to find a ray in NZ, which is why it’s important to understand how to behave and act around them. Understanding this can bring a better dive but also enhance your photography skills.

This program teaches you about the amazing variety of rays you can find in our oceans, how to recognise ray species by their unique physical characteristics and behaviours, and the vital role rays play in our ocean’s ecosystems. You will learn how to safely interact with rays, and why living animals are worth more to our industry.
